Day 1: Arrival in St. Louis

After a flight, nothing beats refreshing yourself and stepping out to explore the vibrant city of St. Louis.

Begin your adventure with a visit to Gateway Arch National Park, where you can take a tram ride to the top and take in sweeping views of Mississippi River and the city skyline. And don’t skip the Museum under the Gateway Arch for an educational and entertaining telling of the pioneers who shaped the nation.

Just across the street, is the historic Old Courthouse – a significant landmark in civil rights history. Step back in time and discover the powerful stories that shaped America’s history. It was here that the pivotal Dred and Harriet Scott case was first heard, a decision that challenged the nation on the issue of slavery and helped set the stage for the Civil War.

Overnight: St. Louis

Day 2: Explore St. Louis

St. Louis is a city full of surprises, offering lively neighbourhoods each with their own character – like the Italian charm of The Hill, the eclectic shops and music clubs of the Delmar Loop, and the historic charm of Soulard.

Food lovers can dive into St. Louis style barbeque, famous for its sweet, tangy sauce. As night falls, the city comes alive with the soulful sounds of the blues, carrying on a tradition that’s been part of St. Louis’ heartbeat for generations.

St. Louis is a city full of surprises, where each neighbourhood reveals its own distinct character—from the Italian charm of The Hill to the eclectic shops and live music venues of Delmar Loop, and the historic streets of Soulard. Food lovers can indulge in the city’s signature barbecue, known for its sweet, tangy sauce, while evenings are best spent soaking up the soulful sounds of blues music, a tradition deeply woven into the city’s cultural identity.

Music remains central to the city’s identity, and the National Blues Museum brings this heritage to life through immersive exhibits and live performances that trace the roots of blues, rock, soul and jazz. For a sweeter slice of Americana, a stop at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard is essential—this Route 66 institution has been serving its famously thick “concretes” since the 1920s.

At the heart of the city lies Forest Park, a vast green oasis even larger than Central Park in New York. Here, you can explore world-class attractions such as the Saint Louis Zoo, admire fine art at the Saint Louis Art Museum, or delve into the past at the Missouri History Museum. Nearby, the Missouri Botanical Garden offers a tranquil escape, where visitors can wander through a serene Japanese Garden, marvel at the futuristic Climatron rainforest dome, and enjoy ever-changing seasonal displays.

For a moment of quiet reflection, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis impresses with one of the largest mosaic collections in the world, its intricate interiors offering both beauty and serenity. Meanwhile, a visit to the historic Anheuser-Busch Brewery provides a fascinating glimpse into the city’s brewing heritage, from production processes to tastings straight from the cellar—along with the chance to see the iconic Clydesdale horses before unwinding in the Biergarten with a well-earned drink.

Overnight: St. Louis

Day 3: St. Louis to Saint Robert (130 miles)

Collect your rental car from a downtown location and set out on your first major stretch of historic Route 66, when the journey is just as rewarding as the destination. Rolling through the Missouri countryside, the road is dotted with classic Americana and nostalgic roadside stops. One of the standout experiences is a visit to Meramec Caverns, a vast underground network first discovered in the 18th century and later made famous as a Route 66 highlight. Beyond its dramatic rock formations, the caverns carry a touch of Wild West intrigue, with legends linking them to outlaw Jesse James.

Continuing on, the town of Cuba - proudly known as the “Route 66 Mural City” - offers a vibrant and photogenic stop, with more than a dozen large-scale murals depicting local history. It’s also home to the Wagon Wheel Motel, the longest continuously operating motor court along the route, adding to the sense of stepping back in time. As the day winds down, arrive in Saint Robert for a relaxed evening. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll through Route 66 Neon Park, where restored vintage signs glow against the night sky, evoking the golden age of the Mother Road.

Overnight: Saint Robert

Day 4: Saint Robert to Springfield (95 miles)

Hit the road for another stretch of classic Route 66, where each stop feels like stepping into a piece of living Americana. In Lebanon, make time for Gary's Gay Parita - a lovingly restored Sinclair service station overflowing with vintage signs, antiques and the kind of warm, unhurried hospitality that the Mother Road is famous for. It's the sort of place that makes you want to linger, camera in hand, soaking up stories that seem to seep from every rusted pump and faded advertisement.

From there, continue into Springfield - the official birthplace of Route 66 itself - where the history runs deeper than almost anywhere else on the road. The History Museum on the Square brings it all to life through interactive exhibits that trace both the city's story and the remarkable legacy of the route that put it on the map. Just around the corner, the Route 66 Car Museum is a genuine treat, with more than 70 gleaming classics on display, from elegant luxury automobiles to vehicles that earned their fame in Hollywood. Cap off the day at Civil Kitchen, where the energy of Springfield keeps the Mother Road spirit very much alive.

Overnight: Springfield

Day 5: Springfield to Branson (55 miles)

A short but scenic drive carries you from Springfield into the heart of the Ozarks, where the landscape softens into forested hills and winding river valleys. Your first stop sets the tone beautifully — the Ozark Mill at Finley Farms is a painstakingly restored riverside mill that manages to feel both historic and completely alive, with farm-to-table dining in a setting that could easily steal an hour or two of your afternoon without you noticing.

From there, roll into Branson, a town that somehow packs more into a single strip than most cities manage in an entire postcode. Highway 76 — known locally as the Entertainment Strip — is the beating heart of it all. Step aboard the Titanic Museum for a genuinely immersive journey back to 1912, marvel at the Aquarium at the Boardwalk, or simply lose yourself in the energy of the live shows that spill out of the theatres lining the road. For a different perspective on the surrounding hills entirely, a Pink Jeep Tour gets you off the asphalt and into the Ozark landscape in the most exhilarating way possible. End the evening with a dinner cruise on Table Rock Lake — the Ozark sunset reflected on the water is the kind of thing that makes you quietly grateful you took this road.

Overnight: Branson

Day 6: Branson

Today is all about getting outside and soaking up the beauty of the Ozarks. Begin at the breathtaking Top of the Rock, where you can journey through a cave with cascading waterfalls and visit the bat bar. Explore the fascinating Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum and enjoy a memorable meal with lake views. In the afternoon, head to Table Rock Lake for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply relaxing by the water.

Overnight: Branson

Day 7: Branson to Kansas City (250 miles)

The drive from Branson to Kansas City is one of those journeys that earns its place in the itinerary rather than just connecting two dots. Rolling Ozark hills give way to open countryside as the road north unfolds, and then the Kansas City skyline comes into view. This is a city that hits differently with a personality shaped by world-class jazz, and legendary barbecue.

Once you're in, the Kansas City Streetcar makes getting around genuinely effortless, threading together 16 stops across the city's most interesting corners — from the grand Union Station and the creative energy of the Crossroads Arts District to the Power & Light District, where restaurants, bars and live venues keep things moving well into the evening. The city's jazz heritage runs deep, and the live music scene that grew up around it is still very much alive - catch smooth sets at The Blue Room or the wonderfully atmospheric Green Lady Lounge, or make your way to the Mutual Musicians Foundation, a historic venue where the music has been known to keep going until dawn.

Overnight: Kansas City

Day 8: Kansas City

Kansas City has a habit of surprising people, and a day spent exploring its museums and markets is usually when it happens. Start at the River Market - the city's oldest public market - where fresh produce, international food stalls and independent shops create the kind of bustling, unhurried atmosphere that sets a morning up well. Nearby, the Steamboat Arabia Museum is one of those genuinely unexpected treasures that travel writers reach for superlatives to describe. A steamboat that sank in the Missouri River in 1856 was unearthed 132 years later with its cargo almost perfectly preserved, tools, clothing, canned goods, buttons, bolts of fabric, an extraordinary, accidental time capsule of frontier life.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial houses one of the largest collections of Great War artefacts in the world, with the Liberty Memorial Tower offering sweeping views across Kansas City that reframe everything you've seen at street level. A short distance away, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum tells a story that is both a celebration and a reckoning — chronicling the extraordinary athletes who played in segregated leagues and ultimately paved the way for integration, with a dignity and depth the subject deserves. Round out the day at the American Jazz Museum, where Kansas City's pivotal role in shaping one of America's greatest art forms comes to life through exhibits, listening stations and artefacts that connect the music to the people who made it.

Overnight: Kansas City
