Overview

Smooth, rich Bourbon, beautiful mountainous landscapes, fun local towns and a love for horse racing and comforting cuisine – the Deep South offers plenty of excitement for a road trip. Starting in Louisville, Kentucky and ending in Charlotte, North Carolina, this eight-night tour is a great snapshot into what makes the Deep South so enticing.

There’ll be ample opportunity to sample each destination’s cheerful southern lifestyle, including learning how to create the region’s favourite tipple: Bourbon, discovering sensational viewing points in the Great Smoky Mountains, and heading to the pinnacle of horse racing tracks, Churchill Downs.

Day 1

Louisville, Kentucky

Your tour begins in Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby. In the evening you’ll receive a welcome reception where you’ll meet your group and settle into your hotel for the next two nights.

Day 2

Louisville

Today you’ll visit Churchill Downs, the racetrack that has become famous for the Kentucky Derby – a horse race that’s known as the pinnacle of the industry. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the Kentucky Derby Museum and learn all about the track’s history, before embarking on a walking tour of Old Louisville, which is full of Victorian history.

Next up is a tour of Museum Row, where you an choose between two museums to explore: either the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory to learn all about All-Star baseball, or the Frazier Kentucky History Museum to see the new Spirit of Kentucky exhibit.

In the evening you’ll all gather together for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3

Louisville – Lexington

The day will be spent travelling to Lexington. There’ll be a few stops along the way, including Buffalo Trace, the oldest continuously operating Bourbon distillery in the USA. Here you’ll learn all about the fascinating craft of Bourbon distilling with some of the staff, before sampling a glass of the good stuff yourself. You’ll also stop in Midway, a peaceful, historic town that was the first in Kentucky to be founded by a railroad, where you’ll enjoy a tour with a local guide and discover the state’s horse country. The town is home to many horse farms, some of which you’ll visit to find out more about their traditions.

Day 4

Lexington – Berea – Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Today you will travel south, stopping off in the college town of Berea, well known for being the arts and crafts centre of Kentucky. There’ll be the opportunity to meet a few talented artisans who will show you their craft, before enjoying lunch at Boone Tavern alongside views of Appalachia.

Next on your journey is Daniel Boone National Forest, named after the American pioneer who once travelled along this rugged landscape that stretches along the Appalachian Mountains. Soon, you’ll arrive in Gatlinburg, a mountain resort that’s welcoming and lively, and the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Day 5

Gatlinburg – Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Gatlinburg

Day five will be spent exploring Great Smoky Mountains National Park with a local guide. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll be discovering one of the most varied ecosystems in the world, and the biggest deciduous forest in the eastern United States. Your exploration will include many stops, such as the Newfound Gap that overlooks both sides of the mountains – both in North Carolina and Tennessee.

After journeying through jaw-dropping mountains, take a breather and enjoy a tasting tour at the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery, before heading to the rowdy Dolly Parton’s Stampede & Dinner show that combines dancing and music with professional horse riders performing daring stunts.

Day 6

Gatlinburg

The day is free for you to explore Gatlinburg at your own pace. There plenty you could do – including heading back to explore even more of the Great Smoky Mountains, or venturing to Pigeon Forge to have a day of fun at Dolly Parton’s theme park, Dollywood.

Day 7

Asheville, North Carolina

The day will be spent travelling to Asheville, a city in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Along the way, you’ll visit the east coast home of the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, before arriving in Asheeville for an orientation walking tour of the vibrant downtown neighbourhoods.

Asheville

Today sees you touring the magnificent mansion that was built for George Vanderbilt II as a ‘little’ mountain escape back in 1895. Known as the Biltmore Estate, you’ll have a tour of the impressive interiors and the pristine gardens, as well as getting the opportunity to enjoy a wine-tasting experience at the historic Biltmore Winery. Afterwards, head to a charming local restaurant for your farewell dinner.

Charlotte

Today you will journey to Charlotte, where your tour will end and you will fly home.
