Overview

Alaska is the perfect place for an adventure, and this 10-night small group tour* is the perfect way to enjoy an Alaskan adventure. Here nature is still untamed and on this tour you will experience the high points of “The Frontier State” – hike to the stunning Bear Glacier, be ferried across the iceberg-filled Prince William Sound, take in the spectacular scenery of snow-capped peaks, majestic glaciers and lush forests whilst spotting the abundant wildlife.

  • Two days in Denali National Park, including a dog sled demonstration and the chance to hike, bike and go white-water rafting
  • A day hike in Valdez and the option to go sea-kayaking

  • Visit the largest National Park in the USA - Wrangell-St Elias, containing glaciers five times the size of Manhattan and the highest mountains in North America

Day 1

Anchorage

Meet with your tour leader this evening in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska with a population of just 250,000, to meet your tour leader and group and begin your adventure

Day 2

Anchorage - Seward

Head south from Anchorage, stopping at the Portage Glacier to walk the Byron Glacier Trail. This short trail takes you along the glacial river into a dramatic valley and to the base of Byron Glacier. From here you continue through Turnagain Arm onto the Kenai (pronounced “keen eye”) Peninsula and the colourful fishing village of Seward, the gateway to the Kanai Fjords National Park.

Day 3

Kenai Fjords National Park

The Kenai National Park covers a thousand square miles and is located on the south-eastern side of the Kenai Peninsula. Here you will enjoy spectacular view of the rugged coastline and the Kenai Mountains. Seward is the base for the Exit Glacier hike up to the Harding Icefield. Whilst this is not an easy hike, it is well worth the effort. Other options include fishing the waters of Resurrection Bay (you’ll need to purchase a permit when you’re there) or enjoy an amazing wildlife cruise of Kanai Fjords National Park, with the opportunity to spot whales, porpoises and sea otters. It is a premier bird watching opportunity, and you will visit a tidewater glacier to experience the sights and sounds of icebergs being calved into the sea.

Days 4 & 5

Valdez via ferry

After leaving the Kenai Peninsula, you ride on the breath-taking Alaska Marine Highway Ferry through Prince William Sound to Valdez. Take in the rugged coastline and snow-capped Chgach Mountains as you pass by majestic icebergs and countless forested islands. Valdez is the most northerly ice-free port in the Western Hemisphere and the terminus of the Alaskan Pipeline that stretches over 800 miles to Prudhoe Bay. It is tucked away at the end of a glacier-carved fjord and called the “Switzerland of Alaska” due to its surrounding snow-capped mountains. There is a an optional, and highly recommended, sea-kayaking trip up to the mouth of the glacier. This area is a walker’s paradise with a wide variety of hiking trails.

Days 6 & 7

Wrangell-St Elias National Park

The Wrangell-St Elias National Park is the largest in the USA, containing glaciers the size of Manhattan and nine of the 16 highest peaks in North America. It borders Canada’s Yukon Territory, and for much of the year offers long hours of daylight. You have a choice of excursions, either take the Kennecott Copper Mill Ghost Town tour or if you’re feeling energetic you can try glacier walking, ice climbing or even ice cave trekking. Tonight you’ll be staying at the McCarthy Lodge, a comfortable and quirky hotel.

Day 8

Alaskan Range

Journey to the heart of the Alaskan Mountain Ranger on one of the most beautiful drives of Alaska, climbing Thompson Pass before arriving at the Maclaren River Lodge. This rustic lodge provides the ideal setting for an authentic Alaskan experience, with spectacular views of the surrounding valley. This is a birder’s paradise with many species often sighted, and you can enjoy the experience of fishing for grayling (permit purchased locally).

Days 9 & 10

Denali National Park

Travel along the old Denali Highway into the Denali National Park, keeping an eye open for caribou and other wildlife, whilst enjoying the peaceful unspoilt Alaskan wilderness. This spectacular National Park is home to a variety of wildlife such as grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep, marmots and wolves, and is where you will find North America’s highest peak at 20,000 feet – Mount Denali. You’ll be staying in cabins in a campground bordering the park, offering several activities to give you the best experience of Alaska, such as river rafting, dog sled demonstrations and walks on quiet nature trails. There is a complimentary shuttle bus into the park, which offers scenic views of the sub-arctic taiga and tundra, as well as superb opportunities to view wildlife and hike the trails. You could treat yourself to the scenic flight over the Denali National Park, with a chance to land on an ice sheet.

Day 11

Talkeetna - Anchorage

On your return to Anchorage you will stop at the town of Talkeentna, where you can try the local speciality – Reindeer Sausage. You can add a half-day bear viewing extension to this tour, which includes a float plane flight into the wilderness.

Flights home today must be booked for departure after 9pm.  Due to flight schedules a post night in Anchorage or night stop on the way home may be required.  Please call for details.
