Visa Requirements

Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from your return date to the UK, and you’ll need to check the full entry requirements before you travel. You can do this by visiting the FCO website or by contacting the relevant embassy. UK passengers can travel to the USA under the Visa Waiver Scheme, by completing an online form using the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ETSA) system. For more information, take a look at the US Embassy site.

Language

English is the primary language spoken, but California is a multilingual state with a number of ethnicities residing here so you’re likely to hear many languages spoken.

Transportation

On foot: Fortunately, many of the tourist attractions in Santa Monica are within walking distance of one another, so walking is a great way to get around. This is especially the case in the downtown area, where traffic can build up very quickly – walking here is invariably quicker and more pleasant in the hot weather!

By bus: The Big Blue Bus service is the prominent company within Santa Monica and serves most of West Los Angeles and is an easy and cost-effective way to get around the city if you’re planning on visiting many of the top attractions.

By taxi: Taxis are readily available and cost $2.85 for the first 1/9th mile, then an additional $0.30 for every further 1/9th. There’s a flat rate for journeys to the airport too – your hotel will be able to advise you on the cost and arrangement of these.

By bike: Santa Monica is a great destination for cycling and prides itself on being a bicycle-friendly area. It’s a great way to see the sights and to make the most of the climate at the same time.

The local currency is the US Dollar – credit cards are readily accepted and you’ll find ATMs and banks easily.
