Day 1

Arrival in New York City

Transatlantic flight to New York to begin your fascinating tour exploring the history of the United States as you travel through the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia

Day 2

New York City

Meet your fellow travellers for breakfast at the famous Ellen’s Stardust Diner. You then be led by a local guide on a fascinating tour of the New York. You’ll see Greenwich Village, the Wall Street district, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Empire State Building, Central Park and Chelsea Market. You will visit St Paul’s Chapel, a place where George Washington once worshipped, and where recovery workers came for rest and care during their time at the World Trade Centre site. In the afternoon you have free time to explore the city some more at your own pace

Day 3

New York City - Philadelphia - Lancaster

This morning you have Diners Choice to select one of New York diners for your breakfast. Then travel to Philadelphia and take a tour of “The Birthplace of a New Nation”, including the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Independence Hall is fascinating, being the location of both the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the drafting of the Constitution. Continue on to the Amish Country of Lancaster, one of the largest Amish communities in America. Tonight you can enjoy a cookery demonstration of a local speciality – apple dumplings – before having dinner.

Day 4

Lancaster

Visit Wheatland, the Federalist home of James Buchanan, the 15th U.S. President. Stop at the Kitchen Kettle Complex and sample the taste of Amish Country, where small batches of jams, jellies and relishes are handcrafted daily. Next, tour the farmlands whilst a local guide introduces you to the history and traditions of the Amish people. Tonight members of the local Amish community join you for dinner, to enjoy a traditional dinner of local specialities and offer the chance to learn more about Amish customs first-hand.

Day 5

Lancaster – Gettysburg - Shenandoah Valley

This morning you will head to Gettysburg and enjoy a tour through some of North America’s most hallowed grounds. Your local guide will bring to life the most decisive battle of the Civil War, the battle that changed a country. Then you can admire the breath-taking views of the Shenandoah Valley while travelling along the famous Skyline Drive, along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Day 6

Shenandoah Valley - Charlottesville - Williamsburg

Today you visit Monticello, the beautiful home and gardens of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was not only the author of the Declaration of Independence and the 3rd President of the United States, but he was also an accomplished inventor. This afternoon you arrive in the historic town of Williamsburg. Tonight’s dinner in Colonial Williamsburg is at one of the famous taverns specialising in colonial fare.

Day 7

Colonial Williamsburg

Start the day by viewing “Story of a Patriot”, a short film introducing Colonial Williamsburg, the renowned living history museum. Costumed guides populate the streets and buildings, bringing 1770 to life. Take a tour of the Governor’s Palace and Gardens before enjoying time at leisure to explore the 88 historic buildings at your own pace

Day 8

Williamsburg - Washington, D.C.

Visit Mount Vernon, the home of the 1st president of the United States General George Washington, where you can wander the beautiful plantation grounds and tour the 18th century house. Later, arrive in Washington D.C. and the world-famous Smithsonian Institution. The fabled Hope Diamond and the Apollo rocket are two of the exhibits you may choose to see as well as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian

Overnight: Doubletree Crystal City (Breakfast Included)

Day 9

Washington D.C.

This morning take a guided tour of America’s capital, taking in the sights of the Capitol Building, the White House and other famous monuments and museums. Your first stop will be the White House Visitor Centre, and then continue onto the moving memorials of World War II, the Vietnam Veterans and the Korean War. The tour concludes with a photo opportunity at the U.S Capitol building. In the afternoon, visit Arlington National Cemetery where you will see the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Kennedy graves. Enjoy a final dinner with your fellow travellers and toast the end of a wonderful tour.
