When to go to Illinois

As Illinois is 400 miles long, the north and south can experience varying climates. Most of Illinois enjoys hot and humid summers and cold winters. The southernmost part of the state, from about Carbondale southward, borders on a humid subtropical climate, with more moderate winters. Annual snowfall exceeds 96cm in the Chicago area, while the southern portion of the state normally receives much less. Illinois averages around 51 days of thunderstorm activity a year and is vulnerable to tornadoes with an average of 35 occurring annually.

Illinois is split up into five distinct tourist regions; Chicago; Springfield and the Land of Lincoln; the southern trails; the Great Rivers. Each offers very distinct attractions. Mother Road Festival in Springfield in September celebrates the classic driving experience on the historic route.
