Overview

A 14-night combination of escorted tour and Mississippi river cruise, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of the southern states. Starting with a welcome Jazz dinner in Chicago and ending in the birthplace of jazz New Orleans, you will visit the capital of Country Music - Nashville, and the heart of Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll – Memphis. Once aboard the American Queen, you will enjoy a unique experience on the only authentic overnight paddlewheel steamboat in America.

Fly to Chicago

Arrive in Chicago and transfer independently to your hotel

Day 2

Chicago

A full day at leisure to explore the must-see attractions of Chicago. Visit the second tallest building in North America – Willis Tower, where you can step out onto The Ledge. Take in the incredible panoramas from 360 CHICAGO (formerly The John Hancock Observatory). Indulge at one of Chicago’s famous pizzeria’s serving up award-winning deep dish pizza. This evening join your fellow travellers for a welcome dinner and some soulful sounds at a legendary jazz or blues club.

Day 3

Chicago – Springfield – St Louis

Heading diagonally across the state of Illinois, you’ll drive through endless fields of corn to the charming city Springfield – the hometown of Abraham Lincoln and capital of Illinois. Continue to St Louis, gateway to the West. Upon arrival you will see the nation’s tallest monument, the Gateway Arch commemorating Thomas Jefferson’s vision and St Louis’ role in the westward expansion of the United States.

Day 4

St Louis - Nashville

Today travel south, onto Southern hospitality, delicious cuisine and a boundless spectrum of music and nightlife. Arrive in Nashville – Music City, where the common thread of music connects the life and soul of the city and its people. This evening experience what makes Nashville special with a live show at Grand Ole Opry – the “country’s most famous stage” (optional)

Day 5

Nashville

A full day at leisure to explore the attractions of Nashville at your own pace. You can choose to follow the story of country music from past to present through the Country Music Hall of Fame. And perhaps visit Historic RCA Studio B – “The Home of 1,000 Hits”. Step onto the stage that attracted so many guests at the Ryman Auditorium. This evening you could enjoy Nashville’s Honky Tonks, a creative breeding ground for hopeful performers, musicians and songwriters.

Day 6

Nashville - Memphis

Next stop is the Birthplace of Rock n Roll and the starting point of soul and blues – Memphis. Located on the bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi River, Tennessee’s largest city is known for its finger-lickin’ barbecue, live music and world-famous attractions. Tour Beale Street, where live music spills from each club. No visit would be complete without walking in the footsteps of the King of Rock n Roll, enjoy an unforgettable journey into the private world of Elvis Presley at Graceland.

Memphis

Enjoy a day at leisure in Memphis. You could visit the National Civil Rights Museum or take a guided tour through Sun Studio where you can learn the story of the studio that launched many musical careers. Later in the day, board the grandest river boat afloat – the American Queen. This beautiful river boat epitomises the grandeur of a bygone era. Experience Southern culture as you cruise through living history along the Lower Mississippee.

Day 8

Greenville

Greenville is at the very heart and soul of the Mississippi Delta. Located on the banks of Lake Fergusson, a short drive from Indianola the birthplace of BB King. Known for its museums, there is a massive range for you to choose from.

Day 9

Vicksburg

Vicksburg perfectly blends Southern culture and heritage with exciting modern-day attractions. Described as the “Key to the South” by Abraham Lincoln, this Southern town carries a history unlike any other Civil War city. Founded in 1811, Vicksburg grew as a vital river port city. Today, Vicksburg is a popular spot for tourist to learn about the battles of the city, taste the cuisine, visit the many museums and pick out the perfect souvenir.

Day 10

Natchez

Founded in 1716 the oldest city on the Mississippi, Natchez is a charming river town known for its elegance, hospitality and impressive preservation of history. Visitors will enjoy the unique shops, restaurants, museums and historical homes.

Day 11

St Francisville

St Francisville was established in 1809 and is the oldest town in the Florida Parishes. Visit the unique shops, historical homes, beautiful churches and lovely parks.

Baton Rouge

The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge has a deep culture and rich history. Home to Louisiana’s capitol building, the largest in the United States, and the Old State Capitol - a Gothic architectural moment overlooking the Mississippi.

Day 13

Nottoway

Experience living history as you enjoy a guided walking tour of the largest remaining antebellum mansion of the Deep South – Nottoway Plantation. This stunning historical plantation lies between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and with its 22 white columns is nicknamed “The White Castle of Louisiana”.

Day 14

New Orleans

This morning disembark in New Orleans and enjoy a free day in this fascinating and fun city. Explore the Garden District, a charming district of oak-lined streets of 19th century mansions. Take a trip on the oldest continuously operating street car in the world. Tour the streets of the French Quarter on a horse and carriage.
