Overview

This itinerary explores the rugged terrain of the American west.  Start and end your tour in Denver the "mile high city"  You continue to Mount Rushmore, Cody, Yellowstone National Park and onto Salt Lake City and Moab before returning to Denver.

 

Details

DAY 1 & 2 Arrival In Denver

Arrival in Denver the “Mile-High-City” just east of the Rocky Mountains. Explore Larimer Square, the revitalized downtown area with boutiques, restaurants, craft shops and art galleries or visit one of the many museums the city has to offer.

2 nights Denver

DAY 3 & 4 Denver – Keystone | Custer State Park Mt. Rushmore area (397 Miles)

On the way to Keystone visit the National Historic site Fort Laramie, the largest and best known military base on the “Northern Plains”. As you approach the Black Hills you’ll understand where the hills received their name; because of their dark appearance from a distance. The Black Hills are rich in Native American history with civilizations dating back to at least 700 B.C. From Keystone there are many different opportunities for exploring - Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial Sculpture, Custer State Park, Needles Highway as well as local attractions like horseback riding.

DAY 5 Keystone - Sheridan (220 Miles)

Sheridan sits on the edge of the Bighorn Mountains, once the heart of Indian country where many Indian battles were fought. On the way to Sheridan take the detour to Deadwood, a town still in the turn of the century style. Another short detour will bring you to Devil’s Tower National Monument, the core of an ancient volcano that rises up to 264m from a fairly flat surrounding. The main attraction in Sheridan is the Bradford Brinton Memorial Ranch that recreates early western life.

DAY 6 Sheridan - Cody (200 Miles)

Be sure to visit the scenic Shell Canyon on your way to Cody, named appropriately after its first important visitor “Buffalo Bill” Cody and located in a stunning area of Wyoming. Visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center which offers the best museum collection of Western artifacts and lore in the world.

DAY 7 & 8 Cody - Yellowstone National Park (100 Miles)

After a short drive you will arrive in Yellowstone National Park where you will spend two nights. Enough time to enjoy and explore this amazing park: it preserves the largest concentration of geothermal activity anywhere in the world and it protects enormous herds of bison, elk, and other animals.

DAY 9 Yellowstone – Jackson /Grand Teton Village (132 Miles)

A scenic drive south to the ‘Grand Teton National Park with it’s snow capped mountains, pristine lakes and evergreen forests, you’ll find beautiful vistas everywhere you look. Keep yours eyes open for wildlife as moose frequent this area. Enjoy an evening in Jackson strolling the town square marked by the arch of tangled elk antlers on each corner.

DAY 10 Jackson | Teton Village – Salt Lake City (304 Miles)

After a scenic drive you will reach Salt Lake City - the Mormon capitol. Salt Lake City lies in a spectacular setting at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake to the northwest. Visit the Temple Square, the symbolic heart of the Mormon religion - see the imposing Mormon Temple, the Tabernacle home of the famous Tabernacle Choir and visit the Family History Library with one of the world’s largest collections of genealogical information.

DAY 11 & 12 Salt Lake City - Moab (230 Miles)

After a scenic drive and a visit to Natural Bridges Monument with its unique natural bridges you will arrive in Moab where you will spend two nights. At the foot of red mountains Moab is the starting point for excursions into Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Many tour companies provide hiking, rafting, bicycling, boating, four-wheel drive tours and scenic flights.

DAY 13 Moab - Vail (258 Miles)

On the way to Vail visit Glenwood Springs located at the confluence of the Colorado and roaring Fork Rivers. Glenwood Springs is home to the world’s largest natural hot spring pools originally used by the Ute Indians. Overnight in Vail, one of America’s biggest and most famous ski resorts.
