Illinois is best known for its famous ‘windy city’ – Chicago – the third largest city in America and a major world cultural centre. However, the state also boasts plenty of other pleasant cities, as well as an assortment of beautiful parks and interesting historical sites. Illinois’ capital is Springfield, which is famed as Abraham Lincolns adopted hometown. The former president’s home of 20 years is preserved here, along with a monument to him, and his tomb. Illinois’ Cave in Rock area is thought by some to be the basis for the cave in Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
