Flights and Transfers

Los Angeles is the main stopover point en-route to Hawaii, when travelling from Heathrow or Gatwick, but you can also fly via San Francisco or Chicago. Flights take in the region of 16 and 17 hours.

Visa Requirements

Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from your return date to the UK and you’ll need to check the full entry requirements prior to travelling – you can do this by visiting the FCO website or by contacting the relevant embassy. UK passengers can travel to the USA under the Visa Waiver Scheme – you need to complete a form online using the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) system.

Language

The primary languages are English and Hawaiian, with English being most commonly used and widely understood, though many locals may speak a form of pidgin English. The streets signs, however, will be primarily in Hawaiian.

Transportation

Bus: In Oahu, buses are an excellent way to get around but on the other islands the bus routes are limited. You can generally get a bus between the major towns but you’ll struggle to find a service to many of the sightseeing destinations. On some of the larger islands, you may be able to seek out sightseeing buses to take you to the main attractions.

Car: Hiring a car is the best way to get around, unless you’re in Oahu where the public transport is a cheaper option. Prices vary between $35 and $50 a day, or $175 to $250 a week.

The currency is the US Dollar – banks and ATMs are readily available.
