Overview

This 10-day escorted tour takes you through the vibrant colours of the autumn, beginning and ending in Boston. You will explore the quintessential sights of New England, visiting picture-perfect Cape Cod and rural Vermont and New Hampshire with their quaint houses, white church steeples and curiosity shops, all the time admiring the beautiful colours of the “Fall Foliage”.

  • Sightseeing in Boston, with the option to extend your stay here either at the beginning of end of the tour
  • On Cape Cod, visit the quaint coastal town of Provincetown and stay in Hyannis, a resort made fashionable by the Kennedy’s
  • Travel into the White Mountains to see the best of the colours from the changing autumnal leaves, and see Mount Washington one of the highest peaks in the US
  • Visit a sugarworks and enjoy a feature breakfast in Vermont, with fresh produce and local cheeses

Day 1

Arrive in Boston

Today you’ll arrive in the vibrant city of Boston where you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Settle in and then meet with the rest of the group of the Travel Director

Day 2

Boston - Plymouth

Begin your day with a sightseeing tour of Boston, exploring the historic sights of the city. Follow the Freedom Trail to see Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market and the site of the Boston Massacre. Drive by historical building including Old North Church, the Massachusetts State House and at the top of Beacon Hill, the State Capitol. Then travel to Plymouth and Plimoth Plantation, a recreated 17th century village where costumed actors bring to life the history of one of the earliest English settlements. Then onto Cape Cod, a naturally beautiful area dotted with quaint colonial villages. You final stop will be Hyannis, the resort made fashionable by the Kennedys, which will be your home for the next two nights.

Day 3

Cape Cod and Provincetown Excursion

Travel along the historic Old King’s Highway, a scenic road winding through centuries of Cape Cod history. Visit the massive sand dunes and long sandy beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore, and view the beach named after the Italian inventor Marconi. Visit Provincetown, one a whaling town but now an artist colony and popular summer resort.

Day 4

Hyannis - Pittsfield

Head west from the Cape towards the towns and villages of Southeaster Massachusetts – the home of over 14,000 acres of working cranberry bogs. You will visit one of these cranberry bogs to learn all about it. Continue along the Mohawk Trail, the first scenic road in New England dating back to 1914. Continue through to the rolling hills of the Berkshire Mountains

Day 5

Pittsfield - Burlington

This morning you will enjoy an “Iconic Breakfast” at the Apple Barn in Bennington, which will include freshly picked apples, apple cider and Vermont Cheddar. Then it’s onto Rockingham to visit the family-owned Vermont Country Store, a quirky shop from yesteryear. At Quechee Gorge, you will admire breath-taking views of Vermont’s deepest gorge, formed by glacial activity over 13,000 years ago. Next stop is Woodstock, a charming town of quaint houses, churches and an iconic covered bridge. You will then drive on through the Green Mountain Forest to Burlington, set on the shores of Lake Champlain.

Day 6

Burlington

Enjoy a free day in Burlington, ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the prettiest towns in America. Explore Church Street Marketplace, full of restaurants, bars and characterful shops. Or you could choose to join the optional excursion on board the cruise boat Spirit of Ethan Allen

Day 7

Burlington – North Conway

Leave Burlington and travel through Jeffersonville, an archetypal New England down with antique shops, art galleries and beautiful colonial houses. You will stop at Stowe, a quirky New England town tucked away in the Green Mountains. Continue onto Montpelier, the nation’s smallest capital city with its elegant gold-domed state house. You’ll have another stop at Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, where you can taste Sugar on Snow – maple sugar served on ice with a pickle. Then cross the state border into New Hampshire and enter the White Mountains, travelling through Franconia Notch State Park. Drive along the Kancamagus Highway – New England’s most scenic byway, until you reach North Conway for a two night stay.

Day 8

North Conway

Today you will take the quintessential Fall colour excursion, into the White Mountains, past Mount Washington and through the Crawford Notch State Park. Stop to take pictures at Silver Cascade Waterfall and Bretton Woods, which offers stunning views of Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the north east. At Rocks Estate, you will tour the farm and learn about the history of maple sugaring, including a visit to a virtual tap room. Return to North Conway for the rest of the day at your leisure, to perhaps enjoy some of the extensive shopping on offer.

Day 9

North Conway - Portsmouth

Continue your journey to New Hampshire and stop at the Castle in the Clouds for a visit of this superb Art & Crafts building. You can admire the lovely views over Lake Winnipesaukee. Cross the state border into Maine and arrive at the charming town of Kennebunkport. Here you will travel along Ocean Drive and enjoy the stunning views of the Maine coastline and admire the homes of the rich & famous. Take a walk along the waterfront before continuing onto the lovely town of Portsmouth.

Day 10

Portsmouth – Boston – Fly home

Leave Portsmouth for the final leg into Boston. Here you will either arrive at the airport for your flight home, or stay on for another night or two to see more of Boston.
