David and Sarah share their USA holiday story with us

Sarah and David went on our Self-Drive Classic New England in America. Here's what they had to say:

Waited 25 years for this; it didn’t disappoint! Began well with a great flight touching down in sunny Boston. Felt completely in control of what we wanted to do right from the start. Excellent tour pack and driving was straightforward (except the very first day but we were a little-travel weary). Made this a full on holiday and were aided by record breaking October highs and full sun every day.

We’re both pretty active and wanted to squeeze every second out of our holiday. First complete day involved a 26 mile walk around vibrant Boston taking in the Freedom trail, JFK’s Brookline home. The WWII USS Cassin Young (a time capsule and no entry fee either) and USS Constitution are well worth the walk. Quincy Market was a foodie heaven. Bliss.

Dream realised by visiting the excellent Louisa May Alcott home just a short drive out of Boston. 80% is exactly as the Alcotts left it 100s of years ago and the guided tour, worth every penny. We laughed. I cried. We learned a lot.

JFK Presidential Library museum a MUST whether a JFK fan (like me) or not. Stuffed full of actual historical documents…and even a section of the Berlin wall. A treasure trove.

Lovely hotel at Portland, Maine. Had a fab night swim in a heated outdoor pool all to ourselves along with mood lighting. Great end to another top day. Quick stop off at the impressive Portland Light Head and then onto Bar Harbour.

As long as I live, I don’t think we’ll EVER see Autumnal colours again like those experienced at Acadia National Park.  Threw ourselves into this Technicolor adventure and went wild. Mountain climbing (including sheer rock faces- with nice easy handholds), beach walking, coastal paths, watching a sunset from the top of Cadillac mountain and eating the best lobster of my life in the stunning town of Bar Harbour. This place was Autumn personified and the abundance of Hallowe’en/ Autumnal decorations on nearly every property just added to the magical mix.

New Hampshire was next and it didn’t disappoint. Mind-blowing colours and vast mountains and rivers. Stunning hotel on the banks of the Pemigewassett River and plenty to explore. Managed a cable car ride, mountain hikes and numerous Franconia Notch walks.

Next stop was breath-taking Vermont, staying at another great hotel in Stowe (with freshly baked complementary cookies every day. Heaven!) Vibrant town with great shops and yumstatic eateries. Climbing Stowe Pinnacle gave us the surreal experience of having red-gold leaves “rain” on us in the gorgeous sunshine on our walk through the woods to the summit. Felt like the queen of the Faeries in this wondrous place.

Visited the MASSIVE Von Trapp family lodge (yes, THOSE Von Trapps!)

Morse Farm Sugar Works on the outskirts of Montpellier is another must. Run by a charismatic chap with the place perfectly set up for visitors. Just wished we’d been allowed to take a vat full of delicious maple syrup back home with us.

Back to the coast for Rhode Island and to see how the world’s one-time elite lived in extravagantly glorious mansions on the 7 mile (return) coastal path.  Newport also had to be one of the best harbour towns we’ve ever visited. Took vibrancy to a whole new level. Thames Street and the harbour is a must for any bucket list (and we don’t even like shopping).

Penultimate stop was Cape Cod and its laid back beauty was a perfect way to wind down our break. Can recommend the beautiful town of Chatham with its pumpkin-festooned church and abundance of great shops and eateries. Visited the famous Chatham lighthouse together with a great beach walk and plenty of bold seals in the bay. Made sure that we drove the length of Cape Cod to take in all the lighthouses and visit bohemian Provincetown.

Final day involved a stop off in Plymouth, another must for history buffs and my last taste of delicious New England lobster (well until the next time).

Goodbye Boston.
