Valdez is the most northerly ice-free port in the Western Hemisphere and the terminus of the Alaskan Pipeline that stretches over 800 miles to Prudhoe Bay. It is tucked away at the end of a glacier-carved fjord and called the “Switzerland of Alaska” due to its surrounding snow-capped mountains. There is a an optional, and highly recommended, sea-kayaking trip up to the mouth of the glacier. This area is a walker’s paradise with a wide variety of hiking trails.

Overnight: Best Western Valdez Harbour (or similar), meals paid locally

Days 6 & 7

Wrangell-St Elias National Park

The Wrangell-St Elias National Park is the largest in the USA, containing glaciers the size of Manhattan and nine of the 16 highest peaks in North America. It borders Canada’s Yukon Territory, and for much of the year offers long hours of daylight. You have a choice of excursions, either take the Kennecott Copper Mill Ghost Town tour or if you’re feeling energetic you can try glacier walking, ice climbing or even ice cave trekking. You’ll be staying at the McCarthy Lodge, a comfortable and quirky hotel, for two nights.

Alaskan Range

Journey to the heart of the Alaskan Mountain Ranger on one of the most beautiful drives of Alaska, climbing Thompson Pass before arriving at the Maclaren River Lodge.
