Overview

Experience southern hospitality and history on this eight-day tour, taking in musical Memphis before touring Vicksburg and the port of Natchez, with its antebellum mansions. Visit the Cajun heartland in Lafayette, Louisiana, sampling traditional music and cuisine and see palatial colonial mansions and plantations on the way to New Orleans, with its French Quarter and unique charm.
Tour includes many meals as per itinerary below:

Details

Day 1

Memphis
Arrive in Memphis and meet your travelling companions at the Welcome Reception where your Tour Director will also brief you on your forthcoming tour.
Overnight stop at Memphis Hilton.

Day 2

Memphis
Take a morning guided tour of Memphis, then visit Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion, where you can even board his private jet. Spend a free afternoon exploring the city and see the blues clubs on Beale Street. (B)

Day 3

Memphis – Vicksburg – Natchez
Drive south from Memphis to Vickburg National Military Park and take a guided tour round its monuments, reconstructed trenches, the Vicksburg National Cemetery and the restored Union gunboat the USS Cairo. Next up is the port of Natchez, where huge plantations and mansions survive from its time at the heart of the cotton industry. Experience real southern hospitality at a candlelight dinner in an elegant antebellum mansion. (B,D)

Day 4

Natchez
Spend the day in charming Natchez, with its many elegant antebellum homes, taking a guided tour of Rosalie, once the Union Army’s headquarters and built in the 1820s overlooking the Mississippi. Also visit Longwood, part of the Civil War Discovery Trail and a National Historic Landmark. Dating from 1859, this opulent octagonal house is the largest of its kind in the country. Its construction was halted during the Civil War and never completed. (B)

Day 5

Natchez – Frogmore – Lafayette
Cross the Mississippi River to tour the 1,800-acre working plantation at Frogmore and then head into the heart of Cajun Country, an area first settled by French Acadian farmers after their expulsion from Nova Scotia in the 1800s. Visit Vermilionville, a restored village in the bayou where locals in period costumes re-enact the lifestyle of the settlers with live craft and music demonstrations. Take an option evening outing for a traditional Creole dinner and local Cajun entertainment to discover more about the region’s distinct culture. (B)

Day 6

Lafayette – Nottoway Plantation – New Orleans
From Lafayette head to St Martinville where you can see the oak tree of Longfellow’s poem ‘Evangeline’, and then take a boat cruise through the swampland of the Atchafalaya Basin, spotting the varied wildlife en route. Next visit Nottoway Plantation, for a tour of it 64-room mansion and manicured grounds, once the most luxurious home on the Mississippi, then continue on to New Orleans. (B)

Day 7

New Orleans
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of New Orleans, the most exciting city of the American south, with the help of a local guide who will take you through the French Quarter, Jackson Square, Pirate’s Alley and stop at a historic above-ground cemetery to learn about the city’s unique funeral customs. See the mansions along the old Garden District and then spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace, or perhaps taking a riverboat lunch cruise along the Mississippi. Your Tour Director will host a Farewell Celebration Dinner at the historic Court of Two Sisters restaurant. (B,D)

Day 8

New Orleans
After breakfast you will return to the airport with an included transfer. (B)
