Enjoy a taste of New York State's interesting history

Many people automatically think of Manhattan as the capital of New York. But as it turns out, it's not. Instead it's the small city of Albany, which has a population of less than 100,000  - that's about 8.3 million less than the Big Apple. Nevertheless, Albany is a charming place with more than a little cheeky pride that it managed to supersede the world's most famous city to be named the state capital.

On a clear day distant views of the Adirondacks and Green Mountains which circle the Albany basin can be seen from John Boyd Thacher State Park - it's a beautiful place for a walk around the top of the Escarpment.

The gigantic Empire State Plaza is one of Albany's biggest draws, with its fabulous reflecting pools, underground shopping and The Egg - a fantastic performing arts centre. Part of the Empire State Plaza is the Corning Tower, Albany's tallest building adorned with Vermont Pearl marble and glass and boasting a fabulous observation deck that looks out onto the mountains.

History and culture buffs will relish an exploration of Albany, including discovering the New York State Museum and New York State Capitol, whilst the Albany Institute of History and Art is well-known for its amazing Hudson River School paintings.

Speaking of the Hudson River, the Albany Aqua Duck is a fun and unique way to explore the city, starting with a normal bus tour along the streets before splashing into the Hudson River to float along past locals waving on the river banks.
