A fantastic self-drive experience which sees you journey through the classic Route 66 hotspots in America. You'll travel through Chicago, St Louis, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Las Vegas, among others, before ending your trip with two nights in Santa Monica - the official end to Route 66.

Day 1

Chicago

Welcome to Chicago – home to some of America’s tallest buildings, a rich culture and, more importantly, the starting point for Route 66! This vibrant city is a fantastic start to your trip, with something for everyone. Check out ‘The Ledge Experience’ at the Skydeck where you can step out onto a full-enclosed glass ledge from the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower.

Day 2

Chicago – Springfield (220 Miles)

Begin your day with breakfast at Lou Mitchell’s in the heart of the Loop in Chicago. In Wilmington, see the 23” high Gemini Giant who’s watched over visitors since 1965. And experience an authentic American diner at the Polka-a-Dot Drive-In – famed for their chili cheese fries! You should make some time to stop by the town of Pontiac, which is considered by many to be one of the best small towns in America. Take a walking tour to see the 19 outdoor murals and visit the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, where you can snap a photo of your car parked in front of the amazing Route 66 mural.

Day 3

Springfield – St Louis (100 Miles)

You’ll travel through the heartland of America today, with the opportunity to drive a piece of Route 66 dating back to the 1930s. In St Louis, make time to visit the Gateway Arch or take a paddleboat cruise along the Mississippi riverfront. You can’t stop in St Louis without a visit to Ted Drewes Frozen Custard which features renowned ‘concrete’ malts which are so thick you can hold them upside down and they won’t move from the cup!

Day 4

St Louis – Springfield, Missouri (218 Miles)

St Louis and Springfield are both old Route 66 towns, with almost every exit dropping you within a few minutes’ drive of mom & pop motels, trading posts and gas stations – all make wonderful photo opportunities. Missouri also plays host to one of the best Route 66 attractions – Meramec Caverns, which have existed for over 400 million years.

Day 5

Springfield – Oklahoma City (285 Miles)

There are a number of historical sites worth visiting today, including the courthouse in Carthage – a striking Romanesque Revival building with medieval castle features. The travel to Oklahoma, a mecca for Old Road fans with more drivable miles of Route 66 than any other state.

Day 6

Oklahoma City – Amarillo (259 Miles)

Today you can visit the Route 66 museum in Clinton where you’ll learn about the history and culture of each decade of this famous route. As you enter Texas you’ll be back on Route 66 for some famous stops, including McLean. In the evening, visit the famous Big Texan Steak Ranch which is home to the free 72oz. steak – provided you can consume the steak and all the trimmings in an hour!

Day 7

Amarillo – Santa Fe (292 Miles)

Just outside of Amarillo, you can visit the Cadillac Ranch – a row of 10 perfectly aligned Cadillac cars buried nose-first into the landscape as a pop art installation. It’s encouraged to write graffiti on the cars! As you pass east you venture through Adrian, Texas, the midpoint of the route. Arrive in Santa Fe where you’ll have two nights to enjoy the arts and culture of the city.

You’ll no doubt want to start your day exploring The Plaza in the centre of town, where fiestas and fairs are held annually. There are some amazing galleries, museums and shops here which are worth exploring too.

Santa Fe – Albuquerque (63 Miles)

A short drive today takes you to Albuquerque – a city famous for its annual hot air Balloon Fiesta. Just outside of the city, visit the famous Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway and be transported 10,738ft high to an observation deck offering up panoramic views of the Rio Grande Valley and the Land of Enchantment. As you arrive in mile-high Albuquerque enjoy a great stretch of Route 66 along Central Avenue with diners, motels and sparkling neon signs.

Day 10

Albuquerque – Holbrook (232 Miles)

If you’re looking for a route that steps away from the beaten track you can travel old Route 66 from Albuquerque to Gallup. This is definitely one of the most scenic portions of the route, with jumbled boulders, distant mountain peaks and a deep red tone to the earth. Don’t miss a drive through the Petrified Forest National Park where you can see 250 million year-old logs that have literally been transformed into rocks in shades of red, purple, amber and blue.

Day 11

Holbrook – Williams/Grand Canyon (245 Miles)

After following giant Jackrabbit signs for miles on end, you will at last reach the Jack Rabbit Trading Post in Joseph City, just west of Holbrook. The next highlight on your agenda for today is a visit to Grand Canyon National Park – one of the seven natural wonders of the world. You’ll enter the park from the east entrance via Cameron Trading Post where you can enjoy an authentic Navajo Taco.
You’ll have time to visit the various view points and enjoy a walk along the rim of this magnificent canyon before continuing to Williams, the last town on Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40. Should you arrive to Williams before 7pm, you’ll be able to witness a gunfight between the local cowboys and the world-famous Cataract Creek Gang!

Day 12

Williams – Las Vegas

This is the longest stretch of old road which starts from Seligman; you can follow it to Kingman before turning north to the glittering lights of Las Vegas. About 30 miles outside Las Vegas you’ll cross the Colorado River on the Hoover Dam which forms the border between Arizona and Nevada. Considered to be the world’s largest dam, it was a true engineering marvel at the time of its construction in the 1930’s.

Las Vegas

You’ll have a full day today to explore the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’ – Las Vegas. Explore the iconic casinos, cool down on a river rafting trip down the Colorado River or take an exciting helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon west rim and the amazing glass Skywalk. In the evening be sure to take in one of the world-class shows!

Day 14

Las Vegas – Santa Monica (284 Miles)

Region the Old Road in Barstow today for the last leg of your Route 66 journey to Santa Monica. Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade and the Venice Beach boardwalk are close to your hotel. Near where Santa Monica Boulevard dead-ends at Ocean Boulevard, a brass plaque marks the official end of Route 66 - the “Main Street of America,” After taking a stroll along the Santa Monica Pier, continue to your hotel.

Santa Monica

You’ll have a full day to explore the sprawling city of Los Angeles, otherwise known as the City of Angels. A short drive takes you to famous sights such as Universal Studios, Hollywood, Mann’s Chinese theatre, Beverly Hills or Disneyland. Or perhaps a relaxing day on the beach would be the perfect way to recharge your batteries at the end of this fabulous holiday!

Day 16

Los Angeles - Home

Spend your last morning relaxing in the California sunshine before returning your rental car at Los Angeles International Airport and transferring independently for your departure flight.

Day 17

Arrive back home.
