Hatton hires Mayweather Snr as trainer

There’s been another new twist to the Ricky Hatton story ahead of his title fight with Paulie Malignaggi in Las Vegas this November. Hatton has just hired a new trainer – and he’s none other than the dad of Floyd Mayweather Jr, the only man to have beaten the Manchester fighter in the ring.

Mayweather Sr is credited with developing his son’s seemingly unbeatable style, and Hatton hopes to benefit from his knowledge of defensive boxing techniques. Hatton, now aged 29, recently sacked his long-standing trainer Billy Graham after an unconvincing win against opponent Juan Lazcano in Manchester earlier in the year.

Hatton’s fight with Malignaggi is set for November 22 at the MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip, and could be a decisive date in his career, as although he is tipped to win by the bookies, others see him as past his fighting prime.
