This seven day self-drive tour takes you through the fascinating and intriguing Capital Region of the USA, exploring Washington, DC, the stunning Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and historic Charlottesville, Virginia, the home town of Thomas Jefferson. Both beautiful and absorbing, the area offers an insight into American history as well as an up-close look at the centre of power in the USA today.

Details

Day 1 Washington, DC

You’ll arrive in America’s famous capital city, Washington, DC. Here you’ll transfer indepently to your hotel.

Overnight: Donovan House

Day 2 Washington, DC

Today you have a full day to explore Washington, DC. Wander past the White House, and take time to tour any of the incredible historical attractions including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial or the US Capitol.  There are many fascinating museums to explore too, such as the Smithsonian Castle, located at the centre of the National Mall and of course, the International Spy Museum and Newseum.

Overnight: Donovan House

Day 3-4 Charlottesville, VA (115 miles)

This morning pick up your hire car and travel to Charlottesville, a pretty town in Virginia that’s famous for being the home of two former presidents of the USA, James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson. You’ll stay here for two nights, enjoying the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, architecture and attractions including Jefferson's Monticello, tea rooms and the city's historic Downtown Mall.

Overnight: Omni Charlottesville

Day 5-6 Chesapeake Bay, MD (129 miles)

Day five sees you travelling to Chesapeake Bay, Maryland and the small city of Annapolis to enjoy the impressive scenery on offer and explore one of the lesser seen natural attractions of the USA. Annapolis, the temporary capital of the United States in 1783 is home to many 18th century houses and the names of several of the streets date from colonial days. Enjoy the Chesapeake Bay and all it has to offer. Spend time in Westmoreland State Park with its beach, Caledon Natural Area with its trails to the Potomac River and its concentration of American bald eagles - and charter boats.

Overnight: Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay

Day 7 Washington, DC Departure (103 miles)

Today you’ll head back to Washington, DC for your flight home.

Day 8 Arrive Home
