Overview

While superlatives strive to convey the grandeur of Alaska, they never quite manage to capture the reality. This Ultimate Alaska Wildlife Safari trip does, though. We take you far afield from the heavily touristed routes to get you up close to the real Alaska: to the inner heart of Denali; alongside the face of a calving glacier; at river’s edge, watching giant brown bears fish for salmon. This is Alaska “less discovered” bigger, wilder and more amazing than you’ve imagined. You’ve got to see it for yourself.

Grizzly viewing at Brooks Falls – a rare opportunity! Cruise through Kenai Fjords aboard a private yacht among icebergs and marine wildlife Wildlife sea kayaking Brown bear viewing in Katmai National Park Hotel accommodations for 12 nights including a stay on a private island in Kenai Fjords and an overnight at a deluxe backcountry lodge deep within Denali National Park, far from tourist crowds.

This trip ventures far afield from the typical Alaska tour where buses move long lines of cruise clients to crowded destinations. This tour focuses on bears, which, naturally, should be treated with caution. At Brooks Falls, thousands of visitors have traveled to view bears in the past 50 years and, to our knowledge, there has never been a bear attack. But we never know exactly what bears are thinking, so we ask our travellers to consider this and pay close attention to the rules set forth by the park rangers.

Details

Day 1: Fairbanks, Alaska

Our Alaska nature safari begins in Fairbanks, a modern city that retains its frontier flavor with pioneer saloons, paddle wheelers and outlying mining camps.

Hotel: SpringHill Suites

Days 2 & 3: Denali – Kantishna

Today we travel south to Denali National Park, larger than the state of Massachusetts and one of the world’s great wilderness preserves. The park's namesake, also called Mt. McKinley, is the highest peak in North America, towering over the tundra and taiga below that provides habitat for wolves, grizzlies, moose and caribou. From our remote base 90 miles inside the park we have time and space to encounter authentic wilderness. Hiking, nature walks, biking, fishing and optional flightseeing are available. The climate and environment of Alaska's interior at this latitude is harsh much of the year, and it takes a vast amount of habitat to sustain animals—wildlife encounters thus tend to be fleeting, though always thrilling!

Hotel: Kantishna Roadhouse

Days 4 & 5: Denali / Girdwood

Depart Denali by train on a journey through Alaska’s rugged interior, over Broad Pass and along the Susitna River to Wasilla. From here we drive south to Alyeska Resort, Alaska’s premier ski area, where a host of exciting summer activities are also offered. Set in a lush glacial valley in the Chugach Range, Alyeska offers nature and luxury in tandem. Explore the northernmost temperate rain forest in North America which surrounds our lodge, or board the tram to the summit, where you may choose to dine at Seven Glaciers, a 5-star restaurant with vistas of the ice-bound peaks and Turnagain Arm far below. On Day 5 we’ll explore the scenic splendor around iceberg-choked Spencer Lake, then take a gentle float trip down the Placer River before returning to Girdwood for the evening.

Hotel: Alyeska Resort

Day 6: Fox Island

This morning we travel to Seward on the Kenai Peninsula where we'll board a boat to Fox Island, a private island on the edge of Kenai Fjords National Park. Our location reveals the pristine side of Alaska most visitors miss. The region is famed for sea kayaking, and an easy paddling excursion this afternoon may unveil some of the area’s prolific marine life.

Hotel: Kenai Wilderness Lodge

Day 7: Kenai Fjords – Private Cruise

Iconic images of Alaska are on display today as we board a private charter boat for a cruise through a realm where the ice age still lingers. Our small yacht allows us to approach wildlife at intimate range, and Kenai Fjords National Park provides unparalleled opportunities for viewing humpback and orca whales, porpoises, sea otters and a large colony of puffins. Here, glaciers pour into the sea, and we may observe icebergs calving with a crash. Following our all-day outing, our boat returns us to Fox Island for a final night.

Hotel: Kenai Wilderness Lodge

Day 8: Fox Island / Seward

After a final morning enjoying the wild environs of Fox Island, we transfer back to Seward. This afternoon we tour the Alaska SeaLife Center on Resurrection Bay. Visitors to Alaska’s only public aquarium and ocean wildlife rescue center find a "window on the sea," enjoying close encounters with puffins, octopus, sea lions and other creatures while peering over the shoulders of marine biologists studying Alaska’s rich and diverse sea life. We spend the night in Seward, surrounded by some of Alaska's most majestic peaks.

Hotel: Kenai Wilderness Lodge

Day 9: Kenai Peninsula / Anchorage

The mountain ranges of the Kenai Peninsula rise one after another on our return drive to Anchorage, as we traverse Moose Pass and cross some of Alaska's richest salmon rivers. Time permitting, we’ll stop at Exit Glacier for a close-up look at this active river of ice. The only portion of Kenai Fjords National Park accessible by road, it is a place where visitors can witness up close how glaciers re-shape a landscape and see plant life reclaiming the barren rock exposed by a glacier's retreat. We overnight in Anchorage.

Hotel: Historic Anchorage Hotel

Days 10 & 11: Katmai National Park - Brooks Falls

Katmai National Park is home to the world’s largest population of brown bears. We fly by small plane this morning to King Salmon, then by floatplane to world-renowned Brooks Lodge, one of the best places to view these coastal grizzlies in their natural habitat. From the safety of platforms built over Brooks Falls, we observe this classic spectacle up close, as the bears fish vigorously for salmon swimming upstream to spawn.

Hotel: Brooks Lodge

Day 12: Katmai / Anchorage

After morning activities in Katmai, we return to Anchorage. We celebrate our Alaskan adventure at a farewell dinner with our Expedition Leader.

Hotel: Historic Anchorage Hotel

Day 13: Anchorage / Home

Today, our Alaska safari comes to a close as we transfer to the airport for our flights home.
