Overview

Head off the beaten track to find the hidden Alaska. Start in Fairbanks and press on to discover the state’s rugged interior, exploring the heart of the Denali National Park, stopping at the private Fox Island, cruising to the Kenai Fjords and visiting Katmai National Park with its brown and grizzly bears. There are plenty of optional hikes and activities for those that want to get active on this epic trip into the wilds of Alaska.

Details

Day 1

Fly to Fairbanks
Meet in Fairbanks, Alaska, a modern city that retains its frontier atmosphere.

Day 2-4

Denali – Kantishna
Enter Denali National Park, one of the world’s greatest wilderness preserves and larger than the entire state of Massachusetts. It features the towering Mount McKinley, North America’s highest mountain, which dominates the tundra and taiga landscape. Wolves, grizzly bears, caribou and moose inhabit the region. Stay at Kantishna Roadhouse, one of only three lodges within the park. Its location 92 miles within Denali lets you get up close to the wildlife and there hiking, biking, fishing, nature walks and optional flightseeing trips are all available.

Day 5

Denali/Talkeetna
Leave Denali by rail to head further into Alaska, crossing Broad Pass via the Susitna River to Talkeetna, a rustic village of log cabins, bush pilots and northern hospitality.

Day 6

Girdwood/Alyeska
Drive southwards to Alyeska Resort, the premier ski area in Alaska. There are lots of summer activities here too, and Alyeska is set in a lush glacial valley near the coast. You can take the tram to the peak where you can eat at the five star Seven Glaciers restaurant, with panoramic views of the surrounding icy peaks.

Day 7

Fox Island
Head across to the pristine beauty of private Fox Island, which borders to Kenai Fjords, to stay at Kenai Wilderness Lodge, which accommodates just 18 guests in en suite beachfront cabins, which use solar power for lighting. Fox Island has fantastic sea kayaking and an optional easy paddling trip can reveal some of the area’s abundant marine life.

Day 8

Kenai Fjords – Private Yacht
Board a small private yacht to cruise through the Kenai Fjords National Park with the chance to spot humpback and orca whales, sea otters, puffins and porpoises. Glaciers meet the sea here and you can sometimes see icebergs dramatically calving into the sea.
Overnight onboard the yacht Seward on Resurrection Bay.

Day 9

Kenai Peninsula/Anchorage
Back on land the tour drive towards Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, following the mountains of the Kenai Peninsula and stopping at Exit Glacier, time permitting.
Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 10-11

Brooks Falls – Katmai National Park
Head into Katmai National Park, home to the largest grizzly bear population in the world. Take a small plane to fly to King Salmon, and then connect to a floatplane for an exciting journey across to remote Brooks Lodge, a top spot to observe grizzly bears fishing for salmon from coastal platforms above Brook Falls. The falls are a one-mile walk from the rustic cabins at Brooks Lodge.
